About Daejeon |

The city is geographically located between 127¡Æ33'21"and 127¡Æ14'54" in the east longitude, and 36¡Æ10'50" through 36¡Æ29'47" in the north latitude. It is in the same latitude as Athens, Lisbon, and San Francisco.
The city is located in the center of South Korea: 167.3 km from Seoul, 294 km from Busan, and 169 km from Gwangju. It is also the gateway between Yeongnam province and Honam province. It is an important place where traffic diverges into two major expressways, the Gyungbu Expressway going to the east and the Honam Expressway to the west. It becomes the hub of national traffic both in name and reality, after the rapid transit railway started operation in April, 2004.

| Daejeon is the fifth largest city among South Korea's top six cities, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, and Gwangju. Its population is 1,390,510 and it covers an area of 539.83 km©÷ at the end of 2000. Comparing areas of the boroughs, Yuseong-gu is the largest borough of the city; the second is Dong-gu; the third is Seo-gu; the fourth is Daedeok-gu; and Jung-gu is the smallest. |

The city has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. It is located in the mid-latitude temperate zone which has seasonal winds and the continental climate. The average annual temperature is between 8¡Æ and 14¡ÆC (Celsius). January (the coldest month) has an average temperature of between 4¡Æ and -20¡ÆC and August (the hottest month) average temperature is 25.5¡ÆC.

| Korea 's average annual precipitation is 113.3 mm but the amount of precipitation varies greatly according to the season. In the summer months, due to the high North Pacific atmospheric pressures, the region receives 55 percent of its precipitation. The month of December has the lowest precipitation rate. | The wind in Daejeon is fairly consistent in direction but varies with the seasons. The southwest wind is the strongest wind and its annual average velocity is 1.8 m/s. Seasonally, spring has the strongest winds at 2.3 m/s; summer winds are 1.8 m/s; fall winds are 1.4 m/s; and winter winds are 1.5 m/s. Summer winds vary the most, due to heavy rains that accompany the tropical depressions. Accordingly, the northwest seasonal winds are the weakest in this area |

| Daejeon is in full bloom during late March and early April: forsythia blooms around March 23rd, azalea around March 27th, and cherry trees blossom around April 4th. swallows come back from the south around April 9th. Meteorological observations from 1969 through 1990, show that the first frost of the year is, on the average, around October 17th and the last frost around April 15th; the first snow falls around November 18th and the last snow around March 17th. October is the fist month when ice begins to form. Daejeon has the mixed climate characteristics of middle and southern cities since it is located between Jungbu and Nambu. The city of Daejeon is a place of modern culture supported by beautiful weather. |
